25 April – World Malaria Day

The World Health Organisation has declared 25 April as a day of commemoration to mark efforts around the globe to reduce the devasting effects of malaria. The disease causes over a million deaths a year, with 90% of all cases occuring in Africa. More than a billion people are infected every year and the disease kills a child every 30 seconds.

‘World Malaria Day’ aims to be an opportunity for malaria-free countries to learn about the devastating consequences of the disease and for countries in affected regions to learn from each other’s experiences and support each other. On this Twinning of Scottish and Malawian Clinics Project blog, we will be featuring comment and responses on malaria treatment and prevention from our friends and partners in both Scotland and Malawi. The posts reflect the human stories behind the statistics.

There has been such an overwhelming response to our request for contributions to the subject that posts will be serialised on the blog over the coming week under themes of diagnosis, treatment, prevention and outreach. Thank you to all those that have voiced their story.
